How to Submit Your Nomination

Council or School Board

If you are contemplating running for Council of the Municipality of Clarington, the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, or the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board, you may file your nomination with the Municipal Clerk during regular business hours from May 2 to August 18, 2022. On Nomination Day, August 19, 2022, nominations may be filed between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

If the number of nominations filed for an office and certified under Section 35 of the Act is less than the number of persons to be elected to the office, additional nominations may be filed between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the Wednesday following Nomination Day (August 24, 2022).

All nominations must be in the prescribed form, including the endorsement signatures, which is available at the Municipal Clerk’s Office and be accompanied by the nomination filing fee of $200 for the Office of Mayor and $100 for all other offices. The nomination filing fee must be paid in cash, debit, certified cheque or money order made payable to the Municipality of Clarington.

A nomination may only be filed in person or by an agent. Facsimile transmissions (faxes) and mailed nominations will not be accepted.

At least 25 qualified persons must endorse nomination papers submitted by candidates. The Municipal Clerk cannot accept a nomination package lacking 25 signatures. A qualified person is someone eligible to vote if an election was held on the day the person endorsed the nomination.

Until you file your nomination package with the Municipal Clerk or designate, your campaign cannot raise money or incur expenses. Also, you cannot spend any of your own money, or that of your spouse, on your campaign before you file your nomination package.

Each person nominated for election to an office must be nominated by a separate Nomination.

If you decide that you want to withdraw from the election, you must notify the Municipal Clerk in writing by 2 p.m. on Nomination Day (August 19, 2022).

Exception: If you were nominated under subsection 33 (5) (i.e. Additional Nominations), you must notify the Municipal Clerk in writing by 2 p.m. on August 24, 2022.

If withdrawing, you are entitled to a refund of the nomination filing fee if you submit your Financial Statement – Auditor’s Report Form 4 covering the financial transactions made up to the point at which you withdrew.

If, after filing a nomination for an office, you decide to seek election for another office on the same municipal council or local board, you may file a second nomination for the new office. The first nomination will be considered withdrawn when the second nomination is filed.

The filing fee will be deemed to have been paid with the latest filing if the two nominations are for two separate offices within the same municipality, where neither is elected by ward. If the nominations are for a different office where one of the offices is elected by ward, you must pay a new nomination fee when you file the new nomination papers. The Municipal Clerk's office will refund the original fee once you submit your financial statements per subsection 88.25 of the Municipal Elections Act. If you are filing a nomination for Mayor, an additional $100 must be paid when you file the new nomination papers.

A candidate is entitled to receive a refund of the nomination filing fee if the documents required under subsection 88.25 (1) of the Municipal Elections Act are filed before 2 p.m. on the filing date per that subsection.
